End-grain recess

An end-grain recess is a flat seat let into one of the two ends of a part, for a base plate.

Use it to let a steel base plate into the foot of a post, so the plate sits flush with the end. Shops let plates of about 115 to 165 mm square into their posts, 10 to 20 mm deep. The seat is flat with square sides; the tool rounds its inner corners.

A post base is a recess and an End-grain bore in the same end, both in the middle. The bore starts in the floor of the recess, and its Depth (along the grain) is still measured from the end of the part, as a machine measures it: a recess 15 deep and a bore 120 deep leave 105 mm of hole below the plate.

Rotation°-180 to 180Not turnedEmpty keeps the seat square in the section. Set, it turns the seat about its middle, counter-clockwise as seen from outside.

Default: what Add fills in on a 3000 mm part of 120 x 120 mm.

  1. Select the part in the Parts list.
  2. In the drawing, pick Face at start or Face at end under Side.
  3. Under Extra processings, click Add and pick End-grain recess. It goes into the middle of that end.
  4. Set Length, Width and Depth (along the grain) to the plate.
  5. Add an End-grain bore in the same end for the dowel or tube.
  6. Check that the part shows a green check. If not, open the Issues tab.

A recess stays in its end: a long face has no base-plate seat to move it to. Turned in its end it goes any way: set Rotation for a plate that sits turned in the section.

BVX2 (Hundegger)Partly supportedExperimental, included with a warning unless you leave it out. Experimental, included with a warning unless you leave them out: the Pocket CAMBIUM writes for a let-in base plate, in the middle of the end or off it, and turned in the end.

BTL status describes what the specification can represent. CAMBIUM imported our earlier BTL test files; confirmation applies to the tested forms and build. See BTL coverage for representation and receiver caveats.
