Mortise

A mortise is a rectangular housing in a face that takes a tenon.
When to use it
Section titled “When to use it”Use a mortise on the part that receives a tenon, such as a leg that takes a rail. The tenon goes on the end of the other part.
Fields
Section titled “Fields”| Veld | Eenheid | Bereik of opties | Standaard | Wat het verandert |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Position X | mm | from 0 | 1460 | Position of the housing along the part. |
| Centre Y | mm | from 0 | 60 | Centre line of the housing across the face. |
| Length | mm | from 1 | 80 | Length of the housing along the part. |
| Width | mm | from 1 | 40 | Width of the housing across the face. |
| Depth | mm | from 1 | 40 | How deep the housing goes. |
| Face | Top, Bottom, Front, Back | Front | The side of the part the processing is on. | |
| Angle | ° | -180 to 180 | Not turned | Turns the housing in the face, about the middle of its start. 0° is square. |
| Slope | ° | 0.1 to 179.9 | Square (90°) | Leans the housing along its length. 90° is square. |
| Inclination | ° | 0.1 to 179.9 | Square (90°) | Leans the housing across its width. 90° is square. |
| End shape | Automatic, Square, Round, Rounded, Radius | Automatic | Shape of the housing ends. | |
| Radius | mm | from 1 | Automatic | Corner radius, for end shapes that use one. Shown only for some settings of the other fields. |
| Chamfer round the mouth | mm | from 1 | No chamfer | A 45° chamfer round the mouth, its size along the face and down the walls. Empty means none. Only BVX carries it, in the shop test pack; the other formats keep the mortise and list the chamfer for finishing by hand. |
| Length allowance | mm | from 0 | No allowance | Hundegger machining allowance. Empty means none. Switched on, it starts at 5 mm, what CAMBIUM puts on a mortise. BVN has no allowance field and CAMBIUM adds its own; BTLx drops it with a notice. |
| Width allowance | mm | from 0 | No allowance | Hundegger machining allowance. Empty means none. Switched on, it starts at 2 mm, what CAMBIUM puts on a mortise. BVN has no allowance field and CAMBIUM adds its own; BTLx drops it with a notice. |
| Depth allowance | mm | from 0 | No allowance | Hundegger machining allowance. Empty means none. Switched on, it starts at 8 mm, what CAMBIUM puts on a mortise. BVN has no allowance field and CAMBIUM adds its own; BTLx drops it with a notice. |
Default: what Add fills in on a 3000 mm part of 120 x 120 mm.
Add a mortise
Section titled “Add a mortise”- Select the part in the Parts list.
- Under Extra processings, click Add.
- Type
mortisein the search field and pick Mortise. - Set Face, then Position X and Centre Y to place the housing.
- Set Length, Width and Depth to the size of the tenon.
- Check that the part shows a green check. If not, open the Issues tab.
Turned or leaning
Section titled “Turned or leaning”Under Turn and lean, Turn in the face turns the housing about the middle of its start, with quick picks for 0°, 45° and 90°. Lean along and Lean across tilt it so a leaning tenon fits; the depth is then measured along the leaning housing, and a small section shows it. Make square puts it back. In the drawing and in 3D, the round knob turns the housing and the knob at the end of its depth line leans it.
A leaning mortise needs a five-axis head, such as on a Hundegger ROBOT-Drive or K2, and the card labels it Specialised machine. BTLx writes every turned or leaning mortise. BVX writes one turned in its face with a note to check the first part, and a leaning one in the shop test pack only. BVN writes a turned one, or one leaning across, in the shop test pack only; one that leans along its length has no BVN form, so it is listed on its part for finishing by hand.
Chamfer round the mouth
Section titled “Chamfer round the mouth”Chamfer round the mouth cuts a 45° chamfer along the edges where the housing meets the face, so a tenon finds its way in and the edges do not splinter. The size is measured along the face and down the walls. It works on a mortise square to its face, turned in it or not, and not on a leaning or housed one: the card then names why it is left out.
BVX writes it as the mortise’s own chamfer in the shop test pack only, since no file shows yet how CAMBIUM measures it. BTLx, BVN and BTL have no field for it: they write the mortise and list the chamfer on its part for finishing by hand.
Into the end grain
Section titled “Into the end grain”A mortise straight into the end of a part, along the grain, is an End-grain mortise. The Face list of a mortise also offers Face at start and Face at end, and picking one turns it into an end-grain mortise. For the seat of a let-in base plate, use an End-grain recess.
Housing
Section titled “Housing”Enable Housing for a wider shoulder block and its matching recess. Set its length, width, depth and corner shape; 10 and 15 mm are quick depth picks. The tongue starts after the housing, and a mortise or socket runs on from its floor. Its depth is additional to the housing depth. Keep the tongue inside the housing and the complete cut inside the timber. Drag the housing depth handle in the drawing or in 3D.
BTLx carries the two cuts together as House or HouseMortise. BVX and BVN housing mappings are experimental: the export includes them with a warning and a preview, and Leave out removes the complete housed joint. BTL 052/053 are still refused. BVN preserves imported 0506 and 17xx forms whose placement has not been confirmed. The existing Housed tenon joint keeps its full-width housing; Narrow housed tenon, Vertical housed dovetail and Horizontal housed dovetail bind the housing dimensions on both halves.
Machine export
Section titled “Machine export”| Format | Status | Details |
|---|---|---|
| BTLx | Partly supported | Mortise, turned in its face and leaning along or across its length too. Allowances and a chamfer round the mouth are left out, with a warning. Housing uses HouseMortise with a nested Mortise. |
| BVN (Hundegger) | Partly supported | Operation 0502, with a corner radius above 10 mm. BVN has no allowance field; CAMBIUM adds its own (5, 2 and 8 mm so far), and the export notes this once. Experimental, included with a warning unless you leave them out: a mortise turned in its face or leaning across (operation 0503). One leaning along its length is listed as a loss. A chamfer round the mouth has no BVN field: the mortise goes out without it, with a warning. Housing uses an experimental complete recess and inner mortise. |
| BVX2 (Hundegger) | Partly supported | Mortise, with shape, radius and allowances. Turned in its face with a warning in the file (no machine has cut one of ours yet), and read back from the shop's own files. Leaning, experimental, included with a warning unless you leave them out. A chamfer round the mouth, as the Mortise's own Chamfer: experimental, included with a warning unless you leave them out. Housing uses an experimental complete recess and inner Mortise. |
| BTL 10.6 | Partly supported | 050 square, turned or angled mortises with shapes and rounding; housed forms use linked 053. Allowances and a chamfer round the mouth are omitted. |
| Machine | Specialised machine | A leaning mortise needs a five-axis head, such as on a Hundegger ROBOT-Drive or K2. One square to its face, turned or not, any machine cuts. Which machine can cut it. |
BTL status describes what the specification can represent. CAMBIUM imported our earlier BTL test files; confirmation applies to the tested forms and build. See BTL coverage for representation and receiver caveats.
