Building systems

A building system (bouwsysteem) is a construction made from settings. You choose the width, the depth, the timber and a few options, and every member, joint and part is built from them. Change a setting later and the whole structure is built again, with every joint in place.
The flat roof on posts has frames across the width, joists along the depth, an edge beam all round, and braces and roof lights if you want them.
Start one
Section titled “Start one”The settings are changed on a computer. On a phone, Fitting shows the design but does not edit it.
Change the settings
Section titled “Change the settings”The Configuration tab lists the settings by section: Dimensions, Material, Posts, Frames, Beams, Joists, Braces, Roof, Roof lights and Footings. Click a section to open it.
- Type a number and press Enter, or drag the slider. While you drag, the model follows. The outliner and the parts list catch up when you let go.
- Each change you let go of is one step in the history, so Undo takes the whole change back.
- Some values are computed from the others, such as the frame centres and the number of joists. They are shown but cannot be typed.
- When a setting had to be adjusted, or leads to a long span, a note appears beside it. For example: the frames are more than 2.4 m apart.
- Presets set several values at once, such as Carport or Large canopy. Defaults puts every setting back.
Width and depth are measured from post centre to post centre. The roof falls towards the back by the Fall you set, in millimetres per metre.
The joints it makes
Section titled “The joints it makes”| Where | Joint |
|---|---|
| Post under a main beam | The post stands under the beam and is let 20 mm into it. You can switch this off. |
| Joist over a main beam | The joist is notched 15 mm over the beam. |
| Joist at the front and back | The joist ends against the edge beam. |
| Corners of the edge beam | The side beams run through, the front and back beams butt against them. |
| Brace | From the post to the main beam, in the plane of the frame. |
| Roof light | Two trimmers between joists, and the joists in between end on them. |
When the roof has a fall, the beams across it tilt with the roof, so every notch stays square to the joist.
Changing members by hand
Section titled “Changing members by hand”You can select and change every member the building system made. If you give one joist a different section, move a point or adjust a joint, that edit stays when you change the configuration. The Held edits list shows what you changed.
- Release returns a held point, member or joint to what the current settings generate.
- When fewer frames remove an edited member, the list marks its edit as No longer in this design. It returns if that member returns. Remove discards that edit.
- Detach keeps the structure as ordinary members that you edit freely. The settings go, and the project keeps the building system’s name, author and licence.
The Joint rules section shows which role pairs get a corner, landing or crossing joint. A template check reports any junction with no matching rule. A rule can also put fasteners at every joint it matches, such as a bolt through every half lap or a peg at every landing, without a designed joint.
With an assistant
Section titled “With an assistant”The same settings and held edits always give the same parts. An assistant using the local Boomkikker CLI or local MCP server can place a building system, change its settings, inspect held edits, validate the design and draw it. The remote MCP server can read, validate and render configured designs.
Gable roof
Section titled “Gable roof”Open My library and choose the gable roof to start a synthetic example. Its pitch ranges from 25° to 55°. The shared fitter chooses a ridge face that supports the full rafter footprint and creates birdsmouth seats on the wall plates. Width, depth and overhang bounds keep members within the existing maximum part length; the template does not splice stock automatically.
Your personal library
Section titled “Your personal library”My library stores configurable designs, joints and joint rule sets under your account. Publish a draft from a script and its manifest, or upload a packed .zaaglijst-system.json. The manifest exposes parameters and bounds, roles, joint rules, presets and reference cases. Author and licence travel with each immutable version.
Draft scripts require your explicit trust before local execution. Run Check locally (300 samples) to check defaults, presets, boundaries and references as well as deterministic random cases. The report records parts, dimensions, machining and diagnostics. You can then approve the checked version yourself; agents can publish drafts, upload local evidence and request review, but cannot approve.
Where a design exists as a 3D model, the CLI’s system check --reference builds the template at that model’s values and compares every part with the model: how far its surface lies from the model’s object, and its length beside the object’s. Each difference you accept is named in the check’s config with the reason, so the report shows what the template does not model yet.
A configured project embeds a pinned copy, so it stays usable offline. For an update, choose the existing project, Preview update, inspect changes and findings, then Accept this update. Stable identities and held edits survive; unresolved held edits remain visible. Library rule sets use stable role keys, and template rules replace matching library rule keys before priority evaluation.
Select a library joint to inspect its preview and per-format machine maturity, then choose a project and Use joint. For a newer joint version, choose the project and Preview joint update, then Accept joint update. Local feature edits stay held; removed or changed features that need attention are listed in the preview. Adding a rule set also uses a preview and explicit acceptance. Pending, changed or failed checks affect badges and leave exports available.
Strength feedback
Section titled “Strength feedback”After a configuration settles, strength checks run in the background. Superseded results are discarded. The panel shows recorded loads, supports and grades, assumptions, overloads and unassessed connection capacity separately from machining diagnostics. You can record an optional reviewer and note tied to the current design and engine. Final verification belongs at the machine.
