Convex cut

Deze inhoud is nog niet vertaald.

A convex cut takes away the timber that lies inside every one of a set of flat planes, whichever way those planes run. Where the planes leave the cut open, the faces of the part close it, as they close the mouth of a pocket.

Convex cut, drawn as in the Add dialog
Convex cut carved into a part, 3D view
Convex cut. Drawn by the editor's own geometry code; right: the carved part in 3D.

A pocket has a floor and four walls whose opposite walls meet the floor in parallel lines. Most housings fit that. Some joints do not: a lobe pressed against a shoulder with three walls leaning three ways, or a splice cut from a cube along its diagonals. A joint like that is several convex cuts, each one a corner of the shape that a single plane cannot reach round.

You do not draw a convex cut in the editor: its planes come from an agent working through the authoring tools, or from a model that was imported. Each plane is a point and a direction, in millimetres along the part, up from the bottom face and across from the back face, and the direction points out of the cut into the timber that stays.

In the editor you can move a convex cut along the part with Position X or by dragging it, and mirror it end for end, top to bottom or front to back. Moving it to a side next to its own is refused, because the same planes would have to turn with the part.

FormatStatusDetails
BTLxNot writtenBTLx has no processing for a body bounded by planes in any direction. The convex cut is listed as a machining loss.
BVN (Hundegger)Not writtenBVN has no macro for it. The convex cut is listed as a machining loss.
BVX2 (Hundegger)Partly supportedExperimental, in the shop's test pack only: a convex cut that is a straight extrusion from one long face (walls square to that face and a flat floor, or through) as CAMBIUM's OutlinedBody, the element a free contour uses. Any other convex cut is listed as a machining loss.
BTL 10.6Not writtenNo BTL 10.6 processing is a body bounded by planes in any direction. The convex cut is omitted with a named loss.

BTL status describes what the specification can represent. CAMBIUM imported our earlier BTL test files; confirmation applies to the tested forms and build. See BTL coverage for representation and receiver caveats.

No machine format has an element for a body bounded by planes in every direction. When a convex cut is a straight cut down from one long face, with walls square to that face and a flat floor or none, BVX writes it in the shop test pack as the outline it cuts, the same way it writes a free contour. Every other convex cut, and every convex cut in BTLx, BTL and BVN, is listed as a machining loss on its part.
