End-grain bore

An end-grain bore is a round hole straight into one of the two ends of a part, along the grain.
When to use it
Section titled “When to use it”Use it for the dowel or the tube of a post base, a glued-in rod, a bolt that runs along the part or a hidden connector. Together with a seat for a base plate in the same end it makes a post base: see End-grain recess.
Where it sits
Section titled “Where it sits”The two ends of a part are Face at start and Face at end. In an end, Height (from the bottom) and Width (from the back) place the middle of the hole in the section, and Depth (along the grain) runs into the part from its end. Each end has its own view under the side views, seen from outside with the top up and a letter on every edge. See End faces.
A bore goes into a square end, and also into an end cut by one flat bevel, such as a mitre or a sloping post top. An end with a knee or a point (a half or a double bevel), one with a tenon, dovetail tail, dovetail, scarf, step joint or lap, and one an imported file cuts or machines with something the app keeps as it is, is greyed out in the Face list, with the reason.
Into a bevelled end
Section titled “Into a bevelled end”On a bevelled end the hole still sits where Height and Width put it in the end view, and it still runs along the grain. Depth is measured from the bevel, where it crosses the middle of the hole, so a 60 mm hole goes 60 mm into the wood however steep the bevel is. The drawing and the 3D view start the hole on the bevel.
The machine files measure from the end’s square plane instead, in front of the bevel, so they write the depth plus that gap: under a bevel that lies 30 mm in at the middle of the hole, a 60 mm hole is written 90 mm deep. The part gets a note when the bevel meets the hole steeper than 60 degrees, when the hole is shallower than the bevel falls across it, or when it has a countersink, which a bevelled end cannot take.
Fields
Section titled “Fields”| Veld | Eenheid | Bereik of opties | Standaard | Wat het verandert |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Face | Face at start, Face at end | Face at start | The end the hole goes into. | |
| Height (from the bottom) | mm | from 0 | 60 | Middle of the hole, up from the bottom of the part. |
| Width (from the back) | mm | from 0 | 60 | Middle of the hole, in from the back of the part. |
| Diameter | mm | from 1 | 20 | Hole diameter. |
| Through the whole length | off | On: the hole runs the whole length of the part. Off: it stops at the depth. | ||
| Depth (along the grain) | mm | from 0 | 120 | How deep the hole goes, measured from the end of the part, or on a bevelled end from the bevel at the middle of the hole. |
| Countersink Ø | mm | from 1 | No countersink | Countersink at the mouth of the hole. BTLx writes the hole without it, BVN and BTL leave the whole hole out, and BVX writes it only in the shop test pack. |
| Countersink depth | mm | from 1 | No depth | Depth of the countersink. Unset means no countersink depth. Shown only for some settings of the other fields. |
Default: what Add fills in on a 3000 mm part of 120 x 120 mm.
Add one
Section titled “Add one”- Select the part in the Parts list.
- In the drawing, pick Face at start or Face at end under Side to see that end.
- Under Extra processings, click Add and pick End-grain bore. It goes into the middle of that end.
- Drag it into place, or set Height (from the bottom) and Width (from the back). Centre in the section puts it back in the middle.
- Set Diameter and Depth (along the grain).
- Check that the part shows a green check. If not, open the Issues tab.
A drilling on a long face moves into an end when you pick an end in its Face list. It becomes an end-grain bore at the same height or width, centred the other way, and the card says what changed. A drilling that went through the part becomes a hole as deep as the part was thick.
Machine export
Section titled “Machine export”| Format | Status | Details |
|---|---|---|
| BTLx | Partly supported | Drilling on reference side 5 or 6. A hole off the middle of the end is placed as the BTLx manual defines those sides, and the export notes this without blocking. A countersink gives a warning. |
| BVN (Hundegger) | Partly supported | Experimental, included with a warning unless you leave it out. Operation 0401 follows CAMBIUM's native conversion: P2 is the height from the bottom and P3 the width from the back. The corrected output has not been confirmed on a controller. |
| BVX2 (Hundegger) | Partly supported | A blind hole in the middle of the start face, the Drilling CAMBIUM writes for a post foot. Not yet confirmed on a machine; the export notes this without blocking. Other holes in an end are experimental, included with a warning unless you leave them out. |
| BTL 10.6 | Partly supported | 040 bores on either end, including off-centre, edge and flat-bevel bores. The bore is retained when its countersink is omitted. Start-face receiver direction has a warning. |
| Machine | Specialised machine | A countersink needs a countersinking tool, such as a Hundegger K2 or ROBOT-Drive has. A plain bore in an end any machine drills. Which machine can cut it. |
BTL status describes what the specification can represent. CAMBIUM imported our earlier BTL test files; confirmation applies to the tested forms and build. See BTL coverage for representation and receiver caveats.
